International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme:
The International Baccalaureate (IB), formerly known as the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), is an international educational foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland. Established in 1968, the IB provides four educational programs for students between the ages 3-19 years.
The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) caters to students between the ages 3-12 years. It offers a trans-disciplinary, inquiry-based, and student-centered education with responsible action as its core, allowing students to explore across traditional subject boundaries.
Requirements for Equivalence of the IB Programme:
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), which includes a minimum of five academic subjects externally evaluated by the IB, including English and Mathematics, is considered equivalent to the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) in Pakistan for the relevant group. In some countries, the MYP is not externally evaluated; instead, it is assessed and issued by IB institutions.
- Appearance in examinations from Pakistan: Eight subjects are required, including English, Urdu, Islamiyat, Pakistan Studies, Mathematics, and three elective subjects.
- Appearance in examinations overseas/abroad: Five subjects are required, including English, Mathematics, and three elective subjects.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) with a minimum of five required subjects from an external examining body in Geneva, Switzerland, is deemed equivalent to HSSC (relevant group) in Pakistan. IBCC considers the IB Diploma, comprising six subject groups with the Diploma Programme (DP) core (Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay), as equivalent to HSSC (relevant group). IBCC does not consider the IB certificate equivalent to HSSC.
Pre-Medical Group: Five subjects are required including English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and one overall best academic subject, with a minimum grade of 3.
Pre-Engineering Group: Five subjects are required including English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and one overall best subject in grades, with a minimum grade of 3.
Computer Science Group: Five subjects are required including English, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, and one overall best subject in grades, with a minimum grade of 3.
Humanities Group: Five subjects are required including English and four elective academic subjects with a minimum grade of 3.
- The Certificate of the Career-related Programme is awarded subject to the satisfactory completion of the following requirements by a candidate:
- The completion of the career-related study is the basic requirement for the issuance of an equivalence certificate, in addition to the completion of other requirements.
- The Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) equates the grading of DP courses passed in the Career-related Programme according to the approved conversion formula available on the IBCC website (same as the IB Diploma).
- The candidate must pass a minimum of two subjects for the Humanities Group and three for the Pre-Medical/Pre-Engineering Group of Higher Level Diploma Programme Courses with a grade of 3 or higher.
- The IBCC equates the grading of the Reflective Project to at least a D. The other core subjects, namely Personal and Professional Skills, Service Training, and Language Development, are internally assessed by the school, so completion is the basic requirement for the issuance of an equivalence certificate.
